Tavistock’s Heritage Quarter can be found in the Guildhall Complex, next to Bedford Square and the Town Hall. Here you can unlock the secrets to Tavistock’s impressive heritage and learn about our place in the Cornwall & West Devon Mining Landscape UNESCO World Heritage Site.

  • Tavistock Guildhall and Information Centre open Tuesday – Saturday 10am – 4pm.
  • Tavistock Museum open Tuesday – Saturday 11am–3pm, from March 30th to November 1st 2024.
  • Museum of Policing in Devon & Cornwall Mini Museum open every Friday 11am until 3pm, from April 5, 2024, until October.
  • Tavistock Subscription Library open every Friday 10am-12noon   

Guildhall Gateway Centre

Open Tues-Sat | 10am-4pm

A ‘gateway’ centre for information about the Cornwall and West Devon Mining Landscape World Heritage Site (WHS), the Guildhall also tells the story of Tavistock’s mining past and of the building itself as one of England’s first purpose-built combined court and police stations.

Tavistock Museum

Open Tues-Sat | 11am-3pm

Housed around Grade I listed Court Gate – one of the original entrances to the Abbey – the Museum displays a wide range of fascinating exhibits. Run by volunteers, it provides an insight into Tavistock life across the centuries.

Museum of Policing in Devon & Cornwall

Open  Friday | 10am-3pm

The Museum of Policing in Devon and Cornwall holds a kaleidoscope of historical policing material including documents, photographs, and artefacts, and provides an in-depth array of material tracing the social history of the region spanning over two centuries.

Tavistock Subscription Library

Open Friday | 10am-12noon

Tavistock Subscription Library is one of the smallest, private libraries in the country and began life in 1796 as a literary club formed by four young men from Tavistock. The library itself was founded in 1799.
